Gijón P2 – Final Recap & Tournament Wrap-Up

Champions Crowned, Fantasy Records Broken & What's Next in Cancún

What a week in Gijón. Over 24,000 fans packed the Palacio de Deportes to witness one of the best P2 tournaments in Premier Padel history – and the finals didn't disappoint. Galán/Chingotto ended Tapia/Coello's winning streak with a clinical 7-5 7-6 masterclass, while Triay/Brea got their revenge over Ustero/Sánchez in a 3-hour war that went 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3. Two new champions, two dominant fantasy performances, and a tournament that rewarded those who backed the right pairs from Day 1. Here's the full breakdown.

🏆 Men's Final – Result

Galán/Chingotto came into the final as the form pair after their three-set SF comeback against Sanz/Nieto. They delivered the performance of the tournament – clinical, composed, and ruthless in the big moments. Tapia/Coello, the world #1 pair chasing a 5th consecutive title, simply couldn't break them.

📊 Men's Final – Fantasy Scorers

The final produced a fantasy scoring blowout. Galán and Chingotto posted identical monster scores, while the world #1 pair had their quietest fantasy day of the tournament by a huge margin.

# Player FP
1🇦🇷 Federico Chingotto48.7
2🇪🇸 Alejandro Galán48.7
3🇪🇸 Arturo Coello13.7
4🇦🇷 Agustín Tapia13.7
🇦🇷 Chingotto & 🇪🇸 Galán Final MVP Duo

48.7 FP each – identical scores in an identical performance. Galán/Chingotto combined for 97.4 FP in the final, the highest combined score of any pair in any single match at this tournament. They beat the world #1 pair 7-5 7-6 in straight sets, ending Tapia/Coello's run of four consecutive final victories. The #2 pair played with total composure and conviction, never letting the scoreline feel comfortable for the favourites. Chingotto was relentless at the net, Galán dominated the back court. This is what a championship performance looks like.

🇦🇷 Tapia & 🇪🇸 Coello Streak Over

13.7 FP each. The world's #1 pair had their worst fantasy day of the entire tournament – by far. After averaging 24+ FP per player through the earlier rounds, they were completely shut down in the final. The 7-6 second set suggests it was close, but in fantasy terms it was a demolition: Galán/Chingotto scored 3.5x more per player. Coello's birthday celebration will have to wait – Galán and Chingotto ruined the party.

🏆 Women's Final – Result

The revenge match everyone wanted. After Ustero/Sánchez beat Triay/Brea in the Riyadh P1 final just three weeks ago, the world #1 pair came into Gijón with something to prove. And they proved it – but it took over 3 hours and every ounce of their experience to get it done.

📊 Women's Final – Fantasy Scorers

Another dominant Triay/Brea performance in the fantasy charts. The three-set format inflated the numbers, but the gap between the winning pair and the losing pair tells the real story.

# Player FP
1🇪🇸 Gemma Triay44.1
2🇦🇷 Delfina Brea44.1
3🇪🇸 Andrea Ustero19.3
4🇪🇸 Ariana Sánchez14.4
🇪🇸 Triay & 🇦🇷 Brea Champions

44.1 FP each – identical scores again, just like the SF (34.6 each). This pair's balance is almost eerie. Combined 88.2 FP in a 3-hour three-set final, proving once again that Triay/Brea in a long match is a fantasy goldmine. After losing the Riyadh P1 final to these same opponents, they took the first set 6-4, lost a tiebreak in the second at 6-7(4), then closed it out 6-3 in the third. Coach Seba Nerone's debut season gets its first title. Brea later revealed she'd been ill all week – which makes this even more impressive.

🇪🇸 Ustero & 🇪🇸 Sánchez Tough Loss

After Ustero's incredible 46.1 FP in the SF, the final was a different story. Ustero dropped to 19.3 FP and Sánchez to 14.4 FP. Combined 33.7 FP – less than half of what Triay/Brea produced. The second-set tiebreak win at 7-6(4) gave them hope, but they couldn't sustain the intensity in the third set. Despite the loss, Ustero ends the tournament as the overall women's fantasy leader (120.6 FP) – a reminder that her SF performance was truly historic.

💥 Key Storylines – Finals Day

🔥 Galán/Chingotto end the Tapia/Coello dynasty (for now). Four consecutive finals lost to the world #1 pair – and then this. A clinical 7-5 7-6 that never felt like it would go any other way. Their first title of the 2026 season, and a statement that the gap at the top of men's padel is narrower than ever. Combined 97.4 final FP is the highest pair score in any single match this tournament.

⚡ Triay/Brea complete the Riyadh revenge in epic fashion. Three weeks after losing the Riyadh P1 final to Ustero/Sánchez (3-6 6-1 6-4), Triay/Brea came back with 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3 in a 3-hour battle. That second-set tiebreak loss at 4-7 could have broken them – instead they responded with 6-3 in the decider. Six consecutive finals. First title since Rotterdam P1 in October 2025. The monkey is off their back.

📊 The fantasy gap between winners and losers was massive. In both finals, the winning pair outscored the losing pair by roughly 2.5-3x per player. Galán/Chingotto: 97.4 combined FP vs Tapia/Coello's 27.4. Triay/Brea: 88.2 vs Ustero/Sánchez's 33.7. The lesson? In finals, backing the winners is worth more than ever.

🎂 Coello's birthday party spoiled. Arturo Coello turned a year older on finals day – but Galán and Chingotto weren't in a generous mood. 13.7 FP on your birthday is not the gift you want. Better luck in Cancún.

🏅 Tournament Overall – Top 5 Fantasy Players

The definitive fantasy rankings for the entire Gijón P2. These are the players who delivered the most total fantasy points across all rounds of the tournament.

Men's Overall Top 5

# Player Total FP
🥇🇦🇷 Federico Chingotto125.0
🥈🇪🇸 Alejandro Galán123.2
🥉🇪🇸 Arturo Coello83.6
4🇦🇷 Agustín Tapia83.3
5🇪🇸 Jon Sanz80.1

Women's Overall Top 5

# Player Total FP
🥇🇪🇸 Andrea Ustero120.6
🥈🇪🇸 Gemma Triay119.5
🥉🇦🇷 Delfina Brea119.5
4🇪🇸 Ariana Sánchez99.2
5🇩🇰 Claudia Jensen84.6

The big takeaway: Ustero didn't win the tournament – but she won the overall fantasy race (120.6 FP). Her monster 46.1 FP semifinal was so dominant that even a quiet final (19.3 FP) couldn't knock her off the top. Meanwhile, Chingotto's 125.0 FP as the men's overall leader was powered by a 48.7 FP final explosion. Both winners (Triay 119.5, Brea 119.5) finished just 1.1 FP behind Ustero – that's how tight it was. Jon Sanz's 80.1 FP in 5th place proves his Cinderella run was one of the tournament's best stories.

📝 Fantasy Lessons from Gijón P2

1. Champions dominate fantasy finals. In both finals, the winning pair scored 2.5-3x more FP than the losing pair. Galán/Chingotto's 97.4 combined FP vs Tapia/Coello's 27.4 is a staggering gap. The final round multiplier rewards winners disproportionately – if you can pick the champion, the points are enormous.

2. Women's overall FP was higher than men's (again). Ustero led all players at 120.6 FP. The women's top 4 all scored 99+ FP across the tournament. The lesson remains: prioritise your women's lineup. It's not a coin flip – it's a consistent edge.

3. Three-set matches are fantasy goldmines. Every time a match went to three sets at this tournament, the winners posted massive numbers. Triay/Brea's 88.2 combined FP in the three-set final, Ustero's 46.1 in the three-set SF, Galán/Chingotto's 54.6 in the three-set SF. Pairs that get tested produce more points.

4. Don't ignore the dark horses. Jon Sanz finished 5th overall in men's fantasy (80.1 FP) as an unseeded player. He was one of the best value picks of the tournament. Always check the draw for potential upsets – the value is in the underdogs who overperform.

5. Consistency beats one big round. Ustero had the single best round of the tournament (46.1 SF) but finished with 120.6 overall. Chingotto had a more balanced scoring profile and finished at 125.0. In a full tournament, steady performance across every round beats one explosive day.

🌴 Next Up: Cancún P2

Cancún P2 2026
📅 16 – 22 March · 🇲🇽 Cancún, Mexico · ☀️ Outdoor
P2

The Premier Padel tour crosses the Atlantic for the first time this season. Cancún's outdoor courts will be a completely different challenge – heat, humidity, and a brand-new surface. The draw will be stacked: expect Galán/Chingotto to arrive with momentum, Tapia/Coello hungry for revenge, and Triay/Brea riding high after their Gijón title. Will Ustero/Sánchez bounce back after two consecutive final losses? And which dark horse will emerge in Mexico?

Fantasy managers: it's time to start thinking about your Cancún lineup. The outdoor conditions will change how matches play out – longer rallies, more physicality, potentially more three-set matches. The fantasy scoring potential is massive.
